The roof of a home is one of the main areas that tends to get neglected most often. Here are some things to think about when preparing for the new season.
Leaves can collect on your roof throughout the year, especially during the severe winds of hurricane season. Twigs and other sorts of debris can accumulate within the gutters, causing moisture to build up. For homes that have trees close to the house, using gutter guards will help to prevent leaves and twigs from getting into the gutters.
Rain can fall abundantly in Florida during the Fall season. Consider the heavy rains that bring in humidity and mold, causing structural damage and allergies. After a storm, visually check to see whether any tiles or shingles came loose or broke off. Make sure vents are still sealed and the flashing is in place.
With whipping winds, tree limbs and multiple types of debris can fall upon your roof causing moisture build up and punctures in the roofing from tree limbs or other sharp objects. Examine shingles/tiles for damage.
On very hot days, the UV rays and radiation can damage the strength of the roof and cause sealants to break or flashing to separate. Take a quick look over the sealants to ensure they are working properly.
Take precautions for holes and cracks in your roofing. Minor repairs that can be easily fixed need to be maintained or they will turn into larger problems such as birds, squirrels or racoons living in your attic by way of the holes and cracks.
